October brought intensified russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, alongside new investment, international engagement and preparations for another wartime winter.

Intensified attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure

russian strikes hit DTEK facilities in the Dnipropetrovsk and Odesa regions, seriously damaging a thermal power plant, while a separate attack damaged the company's office in Kyiv.

The attacks took the lives of two of our colleagues, driver Vitalii Shcherbyna and miner Valentyn Kotelevskyi. Our deepest condolences go to their families, loved ones and colleagues.

Ukraine's winter challenge shifts to transmission

As Ukraine prepares for another wartime winter, attention is increasingly turning to the resilience of the country's transmission infrastructure.

On 28 October, DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko briefed representatives of 24 embassies in Kyiv before joining the Kyiv Security Forum in Brussels online. His message was clear: Ukraine is better prepared for winter, but russia has increasingly focused its attacks on substations and the networks that carry electricity across the country.

Ukraine has enough generation capacity for winter, Maxim Timchenko said, but protecting critical energy infrastructure to ensure reliable electricity transmission remains essential. DTEK and the wider energy sector have prepared by securing equipment and putting backup systems in place, but additional physical protection and air defence remain vital.

Taking “Invest in Ukraine” to a global audience

FC Shakhtar Donetsk began its UEFA Champions League home campaign carrying the DTEK logo and the “Invest in Ukraine” message on its shirts.

The initiative takes Ukraine's investment case to one of European football's biggest stages to show that opportunities to invest in Ukraine exist today.

As DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko said:

“Through Invest in Ukraine, DTEK, Shakhtar and SCM are signalling to global investors that it is possible to access opportunity in Ukraine today.”

October's content introduced Chairman Geoffrey Pyatt, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources and Kurt Volker, former U.S. Ambassador to NATO.

Their perspectives form part of a broader discussion about Ukraine's role in European energy security, international partnerships and the conditions required for long-term investment.
