The Fight for Light: Oleksandr Usyk trains at a war-damaged power plant to support Ukraine’s energy workers

World heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk is using his global platform to shing a light on the devastating impact of russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy system and the workers fighting to rebuild it. 

In a powerful show of support, Usyk visited one of DTEK’s thermal power plants that has been repeatedly targeted by russian shelling. Standing in the plant’s destroyed control room, he put on his gloves and held a training session to symbolise the resilience of Ukraine’s energy workers.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, russia has launched more than 2,300 missiles and drones at Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, with DTEK power plants hit over 200 times. Despite the destruction, energy workers continue to repair critical infrastructure to ensure millions of Ukrainians have light and heat.

During his visit, Usyk met with energy workers who risk their lives to keep the plant running despite ongoing attacks. Usyk thanked them for their hard work and dedication.

“It’s incredible that after every attack, no matter how large the destruction is, the energy workers continue to repair the equipment and restore light to Ukrainians. These people themselves radiate light and hope. Ukraine needs the world’s help in restoring its energy sector; this is our shared battle”, Usyk said.

DTEK and Usyk have collaborated and launched “The Fight for Light” campaign to raise global awareness about russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy system and mobilise international support for its protection and recovery.
