After Marketing Pitch of project topics, participants of the flagship EMBA program of the DTEK Academy “Energy of Innovation” started drawing up capital budgets for the pilots. During the 4th module that was dedicated to "Finance and key business indicators" project teams will get tools and knowledge on the topic.
The module began under the guidance of Maksim Obrizan, a program lecturer and professor at KSE, by examining business examples of the application of quantitative methods. It is especially valuable that during the studying process, teams analyzed their design data and made conclusions regarding the use of methods such as classical linear regression and models of various complexity in their projects.
The teaching baton was picked up by Mykhailo Kolisnyk, a program lecturer, professor of finance at KSE, president of CFO Club Ukraine. Mykhailo, together with the participants, was looking for answers to the following questions:
- what prevents us from making the right financial decisions?
- how to draw up budgets to justify projects so that they find support from management?
- what financial indicators to pay attention when we approve projects?
The use of heuristic methods in management decisions was discussed with Vladimir Vakhitov, professor and vice-rector for research at KSE. We associate, compare with analogues, use intuition, experience. The choice is usually very difficult. Here it is important to remember that:
• focusing on one part of the big picture, we often miss important details. We pay attention to what we have been shown or allocated;
• everything we see, we miss through our own context, and often underestimate the risks and overestimate our own ability to predict.
A well-known feature of the “Energy of Innovation” program is the participation of the Company's internal experts as speakers.
Dmytro Osyka, DTEK's Information Technology Director and MODUS Digital Transformation Program Manager, compared the data with money and said that the data should not be neglected. Data Science Team Lead MODUS Yevhen Oliynyk stressed that at the beginning of the project it is important to collect as much data as possible, as it is quite difficult to immediately understand what exactly is needed. And only after a few treatments you can try to establish patterns. On the example of two cases: a predictive model of breakdowns at thermal power plants and a model that helps to significantly reduce the cost of transporting coal, the program participants concluded that it is necessary to work with data in business.
The case of Odesaoblenergo's connection to the DTEK Grids and consideration of the features of the DTEK Grids’s CAPEX became final on the module. DTEK Grids CEO Ivan Gelyukh and CFO Klim Neretin shared their experience in becoming a full-fledged player with their assets in the electricity market.
