For the first time ever DTEK Grids uses Virtual Reality to train electricians

The VR simulator is the Oculus Quest virtual reality headset, using which our specialists are trained to make repairs in the virtual substation. Kampov Technology, the Ukrainian company, developed the training program for the VR simulator and a copy of a typical substation specifically for DTEK. The virtual model matches the scale, transmits all sounds and provides 360-degree video images. The simulated work environment is as close to reality as possible, and gives the feeling of being present at the power facility. In addition, the program traces compliance with health and safety and industrial safety requirements, the correct use of personal protective equipment, the use of warning and prohibition posters. Previously, mock-ups and stands were used to train specialists at substations, but they could not fully convey the work environment.

“DTEK is a business that serves the interests of Ukraine and implements innovative solutions in all areas, including the training of our employees. Thanks to VR technologies, our specialists can drill their actions when they are at the substation until it becomes second nature, and react as quickly as possible in real time. We take care of our employees, and consistently improve the training system. Our customers will also benefit, since we will be in a position to eliminate the consequences of any blackout quickly. Our prime goal is a reliable and high-quality power supply to residents of urban and rural areas,” says Nataliia Bereza, Head of HR at DTEK Grids.

DTEK looks into the best European experience when it comes to transformation of outdated power grids into innovative digital systems. Training using VR technology has already implemented at DTEK Kyiv Grids, DTEK Dnipro Grids, DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids, DTEK Donetsk Grids and DTEK Odesa Grids.

The DTEK Grids distribution system operators have already conducted the first training sessions using VR headset. Electricians were trained to remove a transformer out of service and then put into operation at a virtual substation. First, the electricians study the theory and perform more than 50 switches in the training mode. Everything is like in real life - interaction with equipment, and performance of required operations. The virtual teacher shows by example how to complete the task.

Training using a virtual simulator is included in the professional training and advanced training program for field teams and electricians who do the substation maintenance. In addition, dispatchers, supervisors of distribution networks and high-voltage substations will be trained using VR, but there will be a separate training course for them.

DTEK Grids has a system of continuous training and advanced training for all employees of the company. Now, there are 80 educational programs for employees from various departments.
