DTEK Grids energy workers joined the World Cleanup Day

Energy workers of the DTEK Distribution System Operators (DSO) in Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Kyiv regions and in the city of Kyiv together with other caring Ukrainians and residents of another 190 countries joined the World Cleanup Day, initiated in Ukraine by the eco movement Let’s do it, Ukraine. They have also joined the Digital Cleanup Week, arranged by the MODUS X team. Overall, during these events they have cleaned the area of 200,000 m2, removed 1,000 tons of waste and 5,800 Gb of digital trash. Participation in such events is a continuation of DTEK’s Sustainable Development Strategy and complies with UN GC goals in Ukraine.

Over 2,800 energy workers of DTEK Grids DSO in Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Kyiv regions and in the city of Kyiv joined the cleanup within the framework of the World Cleanup Day. Communal voluntary works were conducted in settlements near the enterprises and substations. Overall, the area of 197,779 m2 was cleaned and 993 tons of waste were removed.

“Since the beginning of a full-scale war, our environment has already suffered an unreversible negative impact. Mined territories, fires, movement of heavy military machinery, leakage of oil products due to the damage of various facilities by shelling, demolition of the Kakhovka HPP are real crimes against the eco system of both Ukraine and the entire world. Consequences of these events will have a negative impact on the environment for decades. Preventing the eco-catastrophe must start now. It requires united efforts. Understanding this, we have joined the World Cleanup Day and Digital Cleanup Week. Overall, despite the war, DTEK Grids not just restores electricity to Ukrainian families after hostilities, but also continues developing infrastructure of the grids by applying sophisticated digital technologies and based on the sustainable development principles. Our goal is to provide Ukrainians with high-quality services of power supply and be as environmental-friendly as possible in order to reach the UN GC Sustainable Development Goals in Ukraine and promote ESG principles,” – commented DTEK Grids chief ecologist Olena Potapenko.

Within the framework of the Digital Cleanup Week, initiated by MODUS X, DTEK Grids energy workers have removed redundant data from gadgets, cloud storages, digital and internet resources. This practice helps offload data centers, support of which requires huge amount of power. Digital cleanup cuts down CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Besides, this helps us extend service life of our gadgets, thus contributing to reducing waste and preserving natural resources.

During the week, September 9 through 16, employees of the company have removed over 5,865 Gb of redundant data on their digital devices, thus contributing to the reduction of СО2 emissions into the atmosphere by at least 1,466 tons*. This amount of harmful emissions is produced by several cars over the course of a year, and it requires about a hundred trees to absorb that amount of carbon monoxide.

Let us remind that in late July, DTEK Grids launched a new feature on the websites of Distribution System Operators in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa regions and the city of Kyiv, which helps customers inform about discovered stork nests on the poles and condition of birds inside.

*Estimated in accordance with the formula of “Let’s Do It, Ukraine” eco movement.
