The European Green Deal is a unique opportunity for Ukraine to rebuild its economy and demonstrate its readiness to enter the European community. Investments in the implementation of the EU Green Deal by Ukraine will stimulate technological progress, which will help the economy become more efficient and innovative. DTEK’s Executive Director Dmytro Sakharuk spoke about this during his speech at the UN Global Compacts’ ‘Making Global Goals Local Business – Georgia’ event.
The overarching goal of the EU Green Deal is to make Europe the world's first climate-neutral continent by 2050. More concretely, the ambition is to profoundly transform key sectors of the economy and revamp the in-built development models of the EU countries.
"Government consultations with active engagement of business from different sectors, in particular, agriculture, transport, energy, steel and chemical industries is crucial to gather better understanding of what aligning with the European Green Deal would mean for the economy. It will demonstrate what is practically needed to ensure that Eastern European industry, transport and agriculture well embarked on a green transition path with minimizing costs for the society", said UN Global Compact CEO & Executive Director Sanda Ojiambo.
Today, businesses are not only responsible for their own success, but they also strive to meet the needs of a wide range of stakeholders, including local communities, partners, suppliers and employees. In the global energy sector, gradual decarbonisation is an extremely important issue, which will define the well-being of future generations.
“DTEK is transforming itself to become a greener, more efficient and technologically-advanced business that is guided by ESG principles in its activities. This is how we will contribute to the formation of a new Ukrainian economy. We fully share the EU’s climate goals and are aware that decarbonisation is an important factor for both the successful transformation of our business, and Ukraine’s economic stability and prosperity. We apply global best practices, lead on innovations, develop new technologies and openly share our decarbonisation experiences in order to achieve the UN's global goals”, said the Executive Director of DTEK Dmytro Sakharuk.
DTEK's global goal is to become carbon neutral by 2040.
In 2020, DTEK launched a long-term development strategy in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and ESG principles. Our strategy gives consideration to the main aspects of the Green Deal and embodies what businesses should strive achieve: the progress and prosperity of wider society.
