DTEK Group has completed €603 million worth of repairs to thermal power plants and electricity grids damaged or destroyed since 2022, the company said on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion. DTEK added that it plans to spend a further €300 million to repair assets and prepare for the winter of 2026/27, funding the work itself and with international support.
Between 2022 and 2026, the company—owned by businessman and philanthropist Rinat Akhmetov—carried out almost €369 million worth of repairs and maintenance at thermal power plants, and €233 million for repairs and modernisation of the power grid.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has attacked DTEK’s thermal power plants more than 220 times. Every station has been hit, with damage or destruction reported at each site.
Alongside strikes on generation, power-grid infrastructure has also been repeatedly targeted. As a result, around 1,400 substations and other distribution assets were damaged, as well as about 9,000 power lines.
DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko said: “This has been the worst winter Ukraine has endured since independence. No energy system in the world has experienced such destruction. Thanks to our people’s professionalism, bravery and creativity, and the investments we are making to restore power stations and grids, we will make it through this winter.
“Today, like every day since Russia’s illegal invasion, our teams are working around the clock to strengthen the system. Thousands of DTEK employees are working to clear and restore our power stations. Many more are repairing electricity grids in Odesa, Kyiv region, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk and the capital and since 2022, they have restored 98% of the damage. And around the world, we are working with partners to source replacement parts for this winter and new equipment for the next one. Despite Russia’s energy terror, we will not stop until light and heat is returned to Ukrainian homes.”
