Preparation for winter: DTEK modernized five power facilities for the most energy-deficient districts in the Kyiv region
Preparation for winter: DTEK modernized five power facilities for the most energy-deficient districts in the Kyiv region
15 November 2023

Before the start of the heating season, DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids has completed the modernization of five power facilities in the most energy-deficient districts of the region: Obukhiv, Bucha, and Brovary. Equipment upgrades will help energy workers improve the residents' power supply reliability and several socially essential facilities. Despite the war in the country, DTEK continues to invest funds in developing the Kyiv region's electrical infrastructure and preparing the area for winter.

DTEK energy workers have replaced electrical equipment at five power facilities in the Kyiv region with modern and more powerful ones. They have constructed new lines and upgraded power transformers that exceeded their service life and were morally and physically obsolete or destroyed due to hostilities. Besides, they have replaced old oil circuit breakers with more environmentally – vacuum ones, installed surge arrestors, reconstructed relay protection systems, etc.

"Despite the war, DTEK Grids continues to create an infrastructure for rebuilding Ukraine and recovering the economy. These works are directed at improving the reliability of energy infrastructure before winter. Thanks to the construction of new lines and modernized substations, we have reduced emergency risks and improved reliability of the 110 and 10 kV grids that power all of the Kyiv region and, particularly, energy-deficient Obukhiv, Bucha, and Brovary districts," – pointed out Vitalii Shaida, CEO at DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids.

In the Obukhiv energy joint, which is the most energy-deficient, energy workers have constructed and reconstructed four medium- and high-voltage lines. This improved the power supply for more than 11,500 residential buildings and establishments in this region before winter.

In Bucha and Brovary districts, energy workers reconstructed two high-voltage substations that required modernization due to the growing demand for new electrical capabilities. Besides, these power facilities were damaged due to hostilities in the Kyiv region and needed restoration. Reconstructed substations with advanced equipment will ensure reliable power supply to homes and critical infrastructure in the Brovary and Bucha districts of the region.

Modernization of power facilities was carried out with the company's investment program funds. The overall scope of investments in upgrades was almost 295 million hryvnas.

Let us remind you that DTEK Kyiv Regional Grids has prepared the grids in the Kyiv region for winter  to reduce the probability of emergencies on the grids and make the heating season easier. In wartime conditions, energy workers have upgraded almost 300 power facilities and 4,000 km of power lines.

Preparation for winter: DTEK is finishing the modernization of the high-voltage substation and construction of a new underground line in Dnipro
Preparation for winter: DTEK is finishing the modernization of the high-voltage substation and construction of a new underground line in Dnipro
16 November 2023

DTEK Dnipro Grids is modernizing a large high-voltage substation in Dnipro that powers part of the Left bank of the city and constructing a new underground 150 kV cable line for the following districts: Substation, Topolia, and Sokil. Energy workers will complete the work by the end of the year. Implementation of projects will help improve the reliability of power supply to more than 83,000 families and 100 socially essential facilities. Despite the war in the country, DTEK continues to invest funds in developing the electrical infrastructure in Dnipro and the region and preparing the region for winter.

DTEK energy workers have replaced electrical equipment at the high-voltage substation on the Left bank of Dnipro with modern and more powerful ones. They have upgraded power transformers that exceeded their service life and were morally and physically obsolete. Besides, they have installed a new housing module of the enclosed-type cubicle switchboard for electricity distribution in the 35 and 6 kV grids, replaced old oil circuit breakers with more environmentally-friendly – vacuum ones, reconstructed the remote signaling system, relay protection, etc.

“DTEK Grids is creating an infrastructure for rebuilding Ukraine and recovering the economy. We are developing smart grids to be used as a foundation for the resurrection of Ukrainian cities – new, modern, “smart.” Thanks to the modernization of the substation before winter, DTEK Dnipro Grids reduced emergency risks and improved the reliability of the grid that powers 16 schools, kindergartens, and other social facilities, as well as homes of 3,600 families on the Left bank of Dnipro and in two nearby villages,” – emphasized Andrii Tereshchuk. CEO at DTEK Dnipro Grids.

Upgrades are ongoing in the right-bank part of the city, as well. Thus, construction of modern underground lines in the Substation district, Topolia, and Sokil residential communities will be completed by the end of the year. It will replace an old overhead high-voltage line. It is more reliable and safer, especially in cold weather and shelling threats. Overall, more than 32 km of cable made of cross-linked polyethylene will be laid underground. Its advantage is a service life of 50 years and a more reliable power supply for almost 80,000 families. Besides, it will allow the city to free more than 29 ha of land, use of which was previously limited due to the security zone of the high-voltage overhead lines.

Modernization of the substation and construction of the line were carried out with the funds of the company’s Investment program. The overall scope of investments in upgrades was almost 380 million UAH.

DTEK CEO for Reuters: Ukraine's power plants need missile defence ahead of winter
21 November 2023

DTEK is well-prepared to withstand potential russian attacks and sustain operations through the upcoming winter season. However, the company's power plants require additional missile defence systems to ensure safe and uninterrupted operation. According to CEO Maxim Timchenko, the installation of such systems is crucial to protect critical infrastructure and maintain reliable energy supply in war times.

"We need more Patriots, more IRIS systems. We cannot protect ourselves against ballistic missiles if we don't have air defence systems," Timchenko told Reuters in an interview in Warsaw.
