Blog of Oleg Tymkiv, Strategy and Finance Director at DTEK.
DTEK today is one of the largest private energy groups in Central and Eastern Europe. Our principal business is concentrated in Ukraine, and I am confident that we will soon become one of the leading energy groups in Central and Eastern Europe with foreign investments in capital and equities traded on global exchanges.
What is DTEK's secret? The success of a business depends to a great extent on our innovativeness, the ability to meet the challenges of our time, the right strategy, and the actions each of us takes on a day-to-day basis. The development process itself is basically accessible to everyone: people, businesses, states. However, not everyone addresses it. Everyone knows what it takes to have good health, but very few do. I think the same applies to strategies.
Strategy, decision-making, it often seems impressive, at times even intimidating. In fact, you only need to eat the elephant one bite at a time - divide the big task into smaller components. And then it will work out. There is no magic in the development of strategy; there are only few ingenious individual insights in it. It is a multi-level collegial effort.
However, it is important to understand that a successful business is more than a local internal story. All projects involve partnerships, both between the teams within the company and between the teams of the company and its contractors. These partnerships are equally important to the success of the project.
DTEK has implemented large-scale projects to modernize and construct electricity generating facilities. For instance, the company has built the largest green power stations in Ukraine and Europe, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and thus mitigates the impact on climate change. Through these projects, our partners are the best equipment manufacturers in the world, and the experience of working together is invaluable. Our experts have acquired a unique knowledge and enhanced their expertise.
I am hopeful for the future because I know that the DTEK team has the energy to do things that have not been done before us. When we built and launched wind and solar farms, it was an enormous undertaking with the new, the unknown, something that had not yet been in our experience. It is not enough to buy equipment; you need to install it on the site and learn how to use it. And people who hadn't dealt with it before got over it. That is certainly impressive.
The capacity of the Group and its employees to stay the course, to achieve their goal for 5, 10 or 15 years - as long as it takes - inspires genuine respect. Therefore, in the years ahead, we will also continue to achieve our objectives, develop with Ukraine. Whatever the external immediate circumstances may be. Because we have a clear vision of the desired future, and self-discipline is the most important component of any achievements.
