Cyberattacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure – which includes nuclear power – have escalated amid russia’s full-scale invasion of the country, according to a new article by European news outlet Montel.
“These attacks have become an integral part of the hybrid war against Ukraine,” said Yurii Shatylo, Head of the Information Security department at DTEK’s cyber and information security arm MODUS X.
DTEK alone has repelled millions of attempted cyber attacks since the full-scale invasion, protecting the infrastructure relied on by the ordinary people of Ukraine for light and warmth.
The piece outlines the careful preparation needed to protect against attacks that aim to either overwhelm systems to disrupt services or steal sensitive information.
Shatylo said: “The lesson that other countries should learn from Ukraine’s experience is that strengthening cybersecurity is an important foundation of resilience for businesses and the state. Firstly, you need to build multi-layered security [and then] you need to provide regular updates to your system, applications, tools, and technologies.” He also highlighted the importance of the ‘cyber hygiene’: “most attacks begin with the human factor.”
