BBC's Talking Business recently featured an interview with DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko, where he discussed the challenges of maintaining Ukraine's power supply amid ongoing russian attacks as winter approaches.
During the conversation with host Ben Thompson, Mr. Timchenko highlighted the extensive damage inflicted on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, noting that approximately 50% of the country's generation capacity has been destroyed by five waves of russian attacks since April.
Despite these challenges, DTEK, other Ukrainian energy companies and the Ministry of Energy are working tirelessly to prepare for the upcoming winter. Mr. Timchenko emphasised the coordinated efforts across the industry, including:
- Redistributing equipment between power stations.
- Utilising equipment from decommissioned European power stations.
- Receiving support from international allies, including USAID, the European Union, and the UK.
The DTEK CEO also praised the resilience of the company's workforce: "When they destroy, we restore. They destroy again, we restore again," Timchenko stated, highlighting the determination of Ukraine's energy sector.
