What is a Microgrid?



Amid the blackouts, extreme weather, and global crises, microgrid systems could save us from losing power. This technology is progressive, utilizing renewable energy to bring electricity to the masses. Let’s break down the definition of the term and how it has transformed throughout the years.

Microgrid: Definition

The definition of microgrid varies from source to source. For instance, the United States Department of Energy Microgrid Exchange Group states that it is a group of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources. They are classified into:

  • AC;
  • DC;
  • hybrid.

Regardless of the type, they have clear boundaries and can connect to the main grid or operate without it. You can often see them mentioned when you search for “What is decarbonisation”, as they are usually connected to solar panels, wind turbines, and other energy sources.

Development of the Term

The concept has emerged alongside the electric industry. In 1882, when there was no clear standard for the electric system, Thomas Edison opened his Pearl Street Station. This was the first electricity microgrid. So, it was established long before we had carbon offsetting explained and decided to move toward the net-zero goal. Edison’s station was self-contained, powered by coal-fired steam engines, and served just a few blocks.

Since then, other microgrid examples have appeared. However, the majority of people didn’t know about this possibility before Superstorm Sandy hit the United States in 2012. Once a big part of the States lost power, people noticed that some buildings were still lit up. After that, the general grid was rebuilt, and more such solutions were included.

The leading energy company in Ukraine, DTEK, is taking an active part in renewable and microgrid solutions. It has done more than bring the emissions trading meaning to local communities – it has integrated hundreds of green generation microgrids in the country. In 2023 alone, 1,150 facilities were connected to the main grid, empowering the electricity sector.
