DTEK Grids received the award during the annual forum, named ECOtransformation-2020. This project fosters a new system of values in the society, supports leaders of the business community, who shape true national values, such as respect for our land, care for its preservation and prosperity.

Environmental experts have recognized DTEK Grids' efforts to preserve the White stork population in Ukraine: 237 pieces of protective structures have already been installed across five regions of the country. These reliably protect bird nests against electric shock.

"Bird protection is one of the areas of DTEK Grids’ consistent activities on sustainable development. Every year, DTEK Grids Distribution System Operators install protective nesting platforms for storks. In this way, we take care not only of the bird safety, but also improve the reliability of electricity supply to customers,” says Ivan Geliukh, DTEK Grids CEO.

According to the company head, as of November 16, power engineers have installed 156 nesting platforms for storks in Dnipropetrovsk Region, 12 pieces in Donetsk region, 41 pieces in Kyiv Region, 23 pieces in Odesa Region and 5 pieces in Kyiv. By the end of the year, the companies plan to install eight more platforms, and next year they plan to install another 122 pieces.

The Stork Protection Project is a part of DTEK's overall policy on sustainable development, and is in line with the UN Global Compact efforts to conserve biodiversity. The company started its implementation in 2012 in Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk Regions. The first nest safe for storks was installed in autumn 2013 in the village of Pischanka of the Novomoskovsk District in Dnipropetrovsk Region.

In addition to the Stork Protection Project, the DTEK Grids distribution system operators install bird protection devices on overhead power lines. They make the lines visible to birds, and thus protect them against collisions and electric shocks. Between 2013 and 2020, the DTEK Grids distribution system operators have installed 1,879 pieces. The company also consistently upgrades its own energy equipment, replacing obsolete ones with new environmentally friendly, and implements an effective waste management program.
