Protecting the bird population and fighting climate change – the key areas of DTEK Renewables eco-programs

On April 1, the world celebrates the International Day of Birds. Its aim is to draw public attention to the conservation of species diversity and number of birds.

The 1st of April is the International Bird Day. The goal is to draw public attention to the conservation of species diversity and number of birds. Why is this important and what role do innovative technologies play in the study of the diversity of birds and bats?

Birds have lived on the planet for over 150 million years, and there is no such corner on Earth without birds. At the same time, it is natural that their appearance, like their way of life, is diverse.

The sustainability of ecosystems, planet Earth and the life of humanity depends precisely on the number of species. The more there are, the higher the stability. If there are not enough species, the ecosystem will lose one of its eco-chains, resulting in an imbalance. To prevent the global loss of biodiversity, 168 countries signed the UN Convention on the Protection of Biodiversity in 1992. They called on the world community to rally around a fundamental threat to find solutions and reduce environmental impact. Among various tools to decrease impact on the environment is to reduce CO2 emissions, for example, by developing and increasing the share of electricity generation from renewable energy sources in the country's energy system.

DTEK Renewables is one of the largest electricity producers from the renewable energy sources in Ukraine. the DTEK Renewables’ green portfolio includes three solar and three wind power plants with a total capacity of 1 GW. They are located in the Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kherson regions. These renewable power plants increase the energy independence of Ukraine and benefit the environmental situation in the country. The use of generated energy in 2020 allowed avoiding the equivalent of 2,4 million tons of CO2 emissions.

DTEK Renewables strives to ensure environmental protection, reduce our environmental impact, follow principles of sustainable development, invest in environmental protection measures. This approach is applied at all management levels and throughout our value chain.  Environmental protection is an integral part of our ESG strategy and compliance with the UN Sustainability Development Goals.

Four times a year, DTEK Renewables conducts research in the regions where green stations operate using a methodology of the Scottish Natural Heritage Fund. The innovative technologies are also used to calculate biodiversity – observation of birds and bats is carried out using satellite communications.

According to the results of the study in 2020, 54 species of birds were observed in the territories where green wind farms are located during the spring-autumn migration, 26 species during the wintering period, 43 species during the nesting period. Also recorded 10 species of bats, 6 species of amphibians and reptiles, 10 species of wild plants.
