Securing energy independence
We have to consider what Ukraine will be like after the victory. It is clear Ukraine should become the platform for scaling all innovations and global technologies as we reconstruct the country as a modern European state.
According to the International Energy Security Risk Index, which includes the world's largest energy countries, a number of countries significantly strengthened their position on security and reliability of energy supply over the past 30 years. However, since 1991, Ukraine has consistently ranked last, in 25th.
Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine is demonstrating the importance of energy independence for security and peace across Europe, and renewable energy will have an increasingly important role to play. We also need to accelerate Ukrainian plans for decarbonisation.
The key to Ukraine's energy security is integration into the European energy markets and decarbonization of the economy.

DTEK hosted a roundtable at the World Economic Forum to discuss Ukraine’s role in Europe’s energy security. The event, "Ukraine: accelerating decarbonization in Europe”, attracted senior politicians, ambassadors, energy experts and business leaders to discuss critical issues regarding Ukraine’s contribution to the EU’s energy security, as well as Ukraine’s green transition.
DTEK was able to participate in the events in Davos thanks to the support of the World Economic Forum (WEF).
DTEK strongly believes that Ukraine’s energy security should be at the centre of global leaders’ discussions. The discussion during the roundtable was about how Ukraine can contribute to faster integration with the EU, including immediate planning for an increase in renewables.
DTEK Group presented “30 by 2030 initiative” at WEF 2022 in Davos. The “30 by 2030 initiative” aim is to have 30GW of renewable capacity in Ukraine by 2030. And this means it renewables are a significant part of Ukraine's post-war rebuilding plan, and a main driving force for the development of the Ukrainian economy.
The discussion was moderated by Hadley Gamble, Senior International Correspondent at CNBC. The speakers included Rostyslav Shurma, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine; Oleksiy Chernyshov, CEO Naftogaz; Maxim Timchenko, CEO DTEK; Henrik Andersen, CEO Vestas; Kurt Volker, Distinguished Fellow at CEPA, and former US Ambassador to NATO and US Special Representative for Ukraine.

DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko joined the discussion “Europe in Crisis: The path forward” held by Atlantic Council. The 2023 Forum has a special focus on the challenges of managing energy security and decarbonization efforts, including the increasing effect of the war in Ukraine on the energy transition process.
Starting October 10, DTEK facilities have undergone over 170 attacks by missiles, kamikaze drones, and rockets. Russian attacks damaged more than 11 000 pieces of DTEK’s thermal power plants’ equipment. Around 5-6 million people in Ukraine are cut off the electricity daily. On January, 14 Russians launched another missile attack targeting energy facilities in Ukraine.
Despite war conditions, DTEK resumed renewable contraction and electricity supply from a liberated solar power plant. Liberated from the occupiers, the Tryfonivska SPP is gradually resuming electricity production in Ukraine's energy system, including providing the energy needs of settlements in the Kherson region.
