Maxim Timchenko: Reforms and liberalizing the energy sector are the only way to achieve Ukraine’s decarbonization goals

DTEK joined the international conference "Energy Sector in Ukraine - Current Events and Future Business Opportunities", organized by the East German Economic Committee. The event brought together government officials, experts, and top managers from companies in Germany and Ukraine to discuss opportunities and specific projects in support of the European Green Deal, the decarbonization of the Ukrainian economy, and Ukraine’s role as a producer and exporter of green hydrogen.

"Ukraine can make a significant contribution to the decarbonization of Europe. For Ukraine, the only way to achieve the ambitious goals of the European Green Deal is to deepen reforms and liberalize the energy sector. Now is the time to move from political declarations to concrete actions,” said DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko.

The conference has become a platform for strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and Germany in the energy sector. In August 2020, Ukraine and Germany signed a joint intergovernmental Statement on the launch of the Energy Partnership. Among the key priorities of the Energy Partnership are integrating the United Energy System of Ukraine into ENTSO-E, increasing energy security, decarbonizing the economy, exchanging innovations in energy technologies. Additionally, the implementation of joint projects in green energy and digitalization of energy infrastructure and the broader energy system were also discussed.

"DTEK has already embarked on the path of decarbonization and aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. However, to scale this process across the entire Ukrainian economy today, the need to create conditions for investment in renewable energy sources and hydrogen projects is critical,” Maxim Timchenko added.

The East German Economic Committee (Ost-Ausschuss der Deutschen Wirtschaft), the event's main organizer, is a major regional initiative of 29 countries in Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus, and Central Asia. In close cooperation with the leadership of the partner countries and Germany, the committee works to remove trade barriers and improve the economic framework in the region. The Committee consists of about 350 companies - from medium-sized family firms to companies on the German stock index DAX list.

To provide the technological foundation and exchange expertise in the energy transformation, DTEK initiated enhanced cooperation with Siemens Energy and signed a memorandum of understanding. DTEK already has many years of experience cooperating with German companies, whose expertise and scientific and technical base can be valuable for transforming the Ukrainian energy sector.
