PAVLOGRADUGOL (DTEK)

Mid-May, a delegation of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) headed by the NUM Secretary, Chris Kitchen paid a two day working visit to Pavlogradugol (DTEK). The delegation had been invited by the Dnepropetrovsk Territorial Unit of the Trade Union of Coal Industry Employees. The goal of this visit of the British trade union was to share experience of creating conditions for miners’ safe work, rehabilitation, training, etc.

On 12 June, the NUM site published the preliminary visit results and positively assessed the condition of the production facilities and safety situation at the mines of Pavlogradugol.

The message quotes Wayne Thomas, Area Secretary of the South Wales NUM and National Executive Committee member of the NUM:

"Conditions at the coal mine [Pavlogradugol] were similar to those at my own mine, Tower Colliery. It was interesting to see that with state and company support, high standards of safety are strived for and that the union in co-operation with the mine owners had put safety at the highest level. Whereas there can always be improvement in safety it was interesting to see that there was a common purpose between the miners and the company to continually monitor safety and to seek to maintain improvements year after year".

Rashid Azamatov, Deputy General Director on Safety of Pavlogradugol, took part in the conference. He presented the report Safety Management in the Updated Production Management System, which aroused a special interest among conference participants.

‘One of today’s key challenges in the Ukrainian coal industry is low efficiency of safety services at coal mining companies. That is why it has been especially important for us to share our positive experience of reforming the safety system at DTEK’s enterprises with our colleagues, among which Pavlogradugol is’, said Rashid Azamatov.

VOSTOKENERGO (DTEK)

15 May. Vostokenergo keeps the leading position among fossil-fuelled generation companies in Ukraine. In May 2009, Vostokenergo supplied 871.4m kWh to the state company Energorynok, which accounts for 25.7% of the Ukrainian thermal generation market that month.

Vostokenergo is going on with its large-scale programme on energy equipment reconstruction. On May 4, the second reconstruction stage started. Units No. 7 at Kurakhovskaya TPP and No 1 at Zuevskaya TPP were shut down, equipment dismantling began.

11 June. The joint meeting of experts from Vostokenergo, Kurakhovskaya TPP and TekhEnergo (Lvov) has agreed a concept for the construction of a desulphurization installation at unit N7 at Kurakhovskaya TPP. Sulphur treatment will be installed simultaneously with the reconstruction of the energy unit from June to December this year. The expected reduction of sulphur emissions will be up to 60%. The essence of the concept is to inject limestone of special granulation into the convection shaft of the energy unit. Limestone as a sorbent ensures effective absorption of SOx. The project is unique for Ukraine.

The installation of this low-cost facility is a temporary alternative before the introduction of general plant desulphurization planned by the Company for TPPs of Vostokenergo. A tender to select a developer of the feasibility study for such environmental facilities is in progress. Flue gas desulphurization installations (FGD) require significant funds and have a long construction period. Such installations are large constructions the costs for which are equal to half of the funds required to build a new unit. Thus, to have a certain effect now Vostokenergo is installing sulphur treatment under the design developed by the Ukrainian company TekhEnergo.

10 June. Athletes of Luganskaya and Kurakhovskaya TPP (Vostokenergo) successfully took part in VI Summer Sport Competitions among employees of the electric power and engineering industries of Ukraine in Alushta, the Crimea. The competitions included: track and field athletics, armwrestling, kettlebell lifting, table tennis, volleyball, futsal, chess. The team of Lugansk Regional Committee of the Trade Union of Energy Sector Employees, among which members Luganskaya TPP’s employees were, took the first place and the combined team of Donetsk Regional Committee of the Trade Unions (where the sportsmen of Kurakhovskaya TPP participated) was the second.

The athletes of Luganskaya TPP has taken 17 medal places in different sports, including: 7 first places,  8 second ones and 2 third places and, thus, gained the most medals.

The prize-winners of Luganskaya TPP will be a backbone of the combined team of the Ukrainian Energy Sector Trade Union to take part in the inter-sector Sport Competitions among employees of production industries, transport and communications, which will be held in September in Alushta.
