The Energy Security of Ukraine depends on the Development and Construction of New Mines, Yatseniuk
02 September, 2008
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Arseniy Yatseniuk, believes that the energy security in Ukraine depends in particular on the development and construction of new mines.
‘The issue of energy security in Ukraine is related among other things to the development and construction of new mines’, he said during his visit to a miners’ town of Chervonograd in Lvov Region on Sunday, the press services of the Verkhovna Rada reports.
The Speaker noted that the construction of one mine costs on average from 5 to 7 bln UAH. Thus, when planning a new mine, the following should be considered ‘Firstly, coal reserves, secondly, coal quality, and, thirdly, the so-called seam thickness’.
According to A. Yatseniuk, the development of project design documents to construct a new mine in Lvov Region has started today, ‘it is important not only from an economical but also from a social point of view: people need jobs’.
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine expressed his concerns about coal reserves in Lvov Region, which total 1 billion tons and some mines have reserves only for the next two years. Mr. Yatseniuk is convinced that it is necessary to think about how to move miners from unprofitable mines to other sectors of the economy and to build mines only when it is economically feasible.
